The Enquiry Begins

For many years I have written about individual works, exhibitions and projects, but rarely about the connections between them.

Recently, while rebuilding my website and looking back over nearly three decades of work, I began to notice recurring questions that I hadn't fully recognised before. Themes that had emerged instinctively across sculpture, painting, glass, film and drawing gradually revealed themselves as part of the same enquiry.

This isn't a blog in the traditional sense. It isn't simply a record of exhibitions or new work.

Instead, it is a place to think aloud.

Some posts will begin with a conversation from My Private View. Others may start with an artwork, a material, a book, an exhibition or an unexpected memory. They won't necessarily arrive at answers. More often they will open new questions.

Looking back has reminded me that understanding an artwork isn't always immediate. Sometimes the reasons for making something only become clear years later, when viewed alongside other works and experiences.

The Enquiry is an attempt to record that process.

I hope it becomes a place where making, thinking and conversation can continue to evolve together.
