Dog Portraits

Original paintings by artist Si Sapsford

My approach to portraiture is less about producing a straightforward likeness and more about capturing something of the character and presence of the subject.

My dog portraits are made from close observation, looking beyond the obvious features of a breed or photograph to find the particular expression, attitude and personality of each animal. I'm interested in what makes a portrait feel recognisable and alive — the small details, gestures and moments of character that belong to that individual dog.

Each portrait is approached as an original painting in its own right, rather than simply a reproduction of a photograph. The aim is to create something with a sense of presence and individuality: a portrait that feels like that dog.

Based in Henley-on-Thames, I create original dog paintings and pet portraits from photographs, bringing the same attention to observation and character that informs my wider practice as an artist.
