Structure

These works construct spaces without necessarily becoming architecture. Salvaged materials, familiar objects and fragments of structures are rearranged to suggest places that can be entered, navigated or imagined. Sometimes a space is built; sometimes it is only implied — a threshold, a boundary, an opening onto somewhere unseen. The work depends on what the viewer brings to it, allowing imagination to complete what the materials leave unresolved.

Construct 1

Using salvaged wood, painted elements and found materials, Construct 1 & 2 suggest spaces rather than constructing functional architecture. Doors, screens and fragments appear to mark out a place that the viewer can enter and move around, assembling the imagined space through their own movement and associations.

Construct 2

Using salvaged wood, painted elements and found materials, Construct 1 & 2 suggest spaces rather than constructing functional architecture. Doors, screens and fragments appear to mark out a place that the viewer can enter and move around, assembling the imagined space through their own movement and associations.

Wendy House

An ordinary commercially made Wendy house is enlarged to fill the entrance of the gallery, requiring visitors to duck through its doorway to enter. The familiar children's structure becomes the architecture of the exhibition itself, placing the other artists' work inside it and altering the way the gallery ,and everything within it , is encountered.

Elements

Found wooden elements appear to mark out the beginnings of a structure that has not yet been built. Arranged within the gallery, they suggest plans, boundaries and possible rooms without defining them. The absent architecture is completed in the imagination of the viewer.

Landscape

A found landscape painting, a photograph attached to a life ring, a stepladder, a lamp and a fake rock are brought together to construct an imagined landscape. Nothing is quite what it appears to be: natural elements are substituted, artificial light becomes sunlight, and the viewer is invited to complete the scene.

The Dance

A polling booth creates a private space within the public space of the gallery. Above it, bunting made from images of celebrated scenes of war introduces another layer of spectacle and public history. The work brings together enclosure and exposure, private action and public display, asking how spaces shape what we do within them.

Cellar Door

A pair of cellar doors lies horizontally on the gallery floor, transformed from a functional architectural threshold into an image of an opening. They suggest somewhere beneath or beyond the visible space, but offer no access,  leaving the unseen place to the imagination.
