Reflecting on displacement, environmental change, uncertainty and the fear of the unknown, these paintingsconsider the binary nature of everyday life in the face of the extraordinary. It asks how we value one community’s rights over another, where we find beauty, and why we are drawn to some things more than others.

While we might sit enjoying a coffee or playing a game of cards, somewhere in the world a river may be overflowing its banks or a fire raging, displacing people and species and forcing them to migrate in the resulting loss of home and habitat.

Si Sapsford’s paintings explore this duality, bringing images of flooded landscapes, storms and environmental disaster into dialogue with the seemingly self-contained world of everyday life. Her landscapes teeter on the edge of abstraction, while her portraits appear absorbed in their own worlds, seemingly unaware of what is happening around them.
